Back-to-School Prevention Presentations Underway
Thrive Advantage facilitators kicked off the new school year with a series of back-to-school prevention presentations focused on bully prevention, healthy relationships, and substance awareness. Sessions are available for grades 6–12 and can be scheduled through our For Schools page.
5 Signs a Young Person May Be Experiencing Bullying
Bullying doesn't always look the way we expect. Many students who are being bullied never report it — they withdraw, make excuses to avoid school, or show sudden changes in mood or behavior. Key signs to watch for include unexplained injuries, lost belongings, declining grades, changes in eating or sleeping habits, and reluctance to talk about school. Early recognition is one of the most powerful prevention tools available to parents, educators, and community members.
Talking to Teens About Mental Health: A Guide for Parents
Mental health conversations can feel difficult to start, but they don't have to be. Research consistently shows that young people who feel they can talk openly with a trusted adult are more likely to seek help when they need it. Thrive Advantage recommends starting small — ask open-ended questions, listen without judgment, and normalize the idea that everyone struggles sometimes. Our awareness materials include age-appropriate guides for parents and guardians who want to open these conversations at home.
Why Reading for Meaning Matters More Than Reading Speed
Literacy is more than decoding words on a page — it's the ability to understand, analyze, and connect what you read to your own life and world. Thrive Advantage's literacy resources are designed to build comprehension alongside fluency, helping students in grades 3–10 develop the critical thinking skills they need for academic success and everyday decision-making. When young people read with purpose, they become more confident learners and more informed community members.
Goal-Setting With Youth: How to Make It Stick
Setting goals is a skill — and like any skill, it takes practice. Thrive Advantage's personal growth materials teach students to move beyond vague wishes ('I want to do better in school') toward specific, actionable plans with clear steps and checkpoints. We use a guided reflection approach that helps students identify their values, recognize their strengths, and build habits that support long-term success. Our 'Know Your Story' workbook is available in the Resource Library for grades 8–12.
Understanding Peer Pressure: What Students Need to Know
Peer pressure is one of the most common risk factors young people face — and one of the least talked about in honest terms. Thrive Advantage's prevention curriculum addresses peer pressure directly, giving students language and strategies to recognize it, name it, and respond to it with confidence. We cover both direct pressure ('just do it') and indirect pressure (feeling like you have to fit in), and we help students practice refusal skills in low-stakes environments before they need them in real ones.
Substance Awareness: Starting the Conversation Early
The most effective substance prevention happens before young people are ever offered drugs or alcohol — not after. Thrive Advantage's awareness materials introduce age-appropriate conversations about substances starting in middle school, focusing on brain development, decision-making under pressure, and the social dynamics that make substances appealing. Our goal is not to scare students, but to give them accurate information and the confidence to make choices that protect their health and future.
The Silly Lilly Series: Social-Emotional Learning Through Story
The Silly Lilly book series was created to bring social-emotional learning to young readers in a format they love. Each book in the series tackles a real topic — bullying, resilience, self-worth, friendship — through an engaging story that invites conversation. Teachers and parents report that the books spark discussions that would be hard to start any other way. The full series is available through our Books page, and select titles are used in Thrive Advantage school presentations.
Building Resilience in Youth: What the Research Says
Resilience is not something young people either have or don't have — it's a set of skills and habits that can be taught, practiced, and strengthened over time. Research points to three consistent protective factors: at least one stable, caring adult relationship; a sense of self-efficacy and perceived control; and strong problem-solving skills. Thrive Advantage's personal growth curriculum is built around all three, giving students structured opportunities to develop resilience before they face their hardest challenges.
